What just happened?

Fashion’s chart toppers, the return of soap bars and yet more ugly shoes

Week 30.

What’s been happening this past week? These are some of the things we found interesting in the past few days…

Loewe is the hottest brand of the moment

The business model of outlandish clothes on the runway but wearable in the store is hardly new (Thom Browne has been doing ridiculous shows and selling striped shirts for years) but it is clearly still working: Spanish luxury brand Loewe has just been named as the hottest label in the world by fashion analysts Lyst. Based on Google and social media action, it seems that millions of people are looking up J.W. Andersen’s surreal take on shoes with broken eggs as heels and sculpted dresses that you can’t actually sit down in. In reality of course, customers are flocking to the stores to buy Loewe’s beautifully crafted and relatively classic bags and small leather goods. We certainly wouldn’t say no to one of their gorgeous puzzle tote bags just released this week.

Hermès Birkin is the most-coveted luxury handbag

Another ‘top’ statistic emerged this week: Hermes’ iconic Birkin handbag is the world’s most sought after. Although the capacious and extraordinarily expensive bag has been a jet set favorite for decades, there was undoubtedly a spike in attention last week after the sad news of Jane Birkin’s death (the bag was inspired by and named after her when she commented that the standard Kelly bag wasn’t big enough for all the things she wanted to carry around). Sadly for nearly all the 150 000 people who google it every month, the bag is out of reach – the waiting lists are endless and the prices start at €9k and climb to an eye-watering €450k. So instead, treat yourself and listen to Jane’s beautiful rendition of ‘Harvest Moon’ on Spotify.

Aēsop’s new body bar soaps

Maybe because half the showers we take are in gym locker rooms, but we usually favour a liquid body wash rather than a bar of soap – after all the latter are kinda inconvenient to transport and are often quite harsh on the skin. But three new soaps from Aesop might change our minds. With typical Aussie directness, they tell you what they do: the bars are named Refresh, Polish and Nurture (we guess Clean was too obvious). The fragrances are fresh and either citrusy or herby and the soap moisturises too so you’re not left with that tight skin feeling when you step out of the shower.

Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic

We always think that instead of going crazy with colourful trendy outfits for summer, it is better to keep it simple and get yourself an eye-catching accessory which can be easily combined and used not only for one summer. And what’s a better accessory than a watch?! Swiss watchmaker Zodiac has added a white ceramic case to their vintage-inspired Sea Wolf collection and came up with a trio of dazzling dials: white, summer blue and bright Caribbean green. It’s a combination of a ceramic outer case and a steel core, with a diameter of 41mm, which comes with matching rubber straps, a power reserve of 55 hours and water resistance of 200 meters. All with a price tag of €1600. So while you are booking yourself a last-minute summer vacation, you might add this watch to your shopping list as well. Now all you have to do is imagine yourself sipping a tiki cocktail with this watch on your wrist and going for a swim afterwards.

Marni’s Big shoes

Readers of our site will probably remember a desperate but impassioned cry to stop all this ironic ugly footwear. Sadly it seems to have fallen on deaf ears and the trend has moved from clumpy wannabe-Crocs to what look like inflated sneakers. Maybe it’s the influence of so many cartoon-based life action films but footwear brands really seem to think we want to walk around like Super Mario. We don’t. We won’t talk about the attention grabbing ‘ironic’ MSCHF x Crocs Big Boot (it’s been memed to death already and Paris Hilton isn’t going to make them any cooler) but it’s sad to see usually-tasteful Marni release the seriously hideous Bigfoot 2.0 sneaker – something that would look good on Noddy perhaps but nowhere else.  If you MUST follow this ill-advised trend, may we suggest Axel Arigato whose Area Haze is a somewhat more wearable version.
