What’s been happening this past week? These are some of the things we found interesting in the past few days…
Prada’s Caffè Principe
Fashion/food collabs seem to be the marketing trend of the summer with Louis Vuitton opening a cafe in Saint Tropez, just steps away from the Jacquemus pop-up beach club. However, we think the chicest has to be Prada’s beautiful (and permanent) renovation of the historic Caffe Principe in the Italian coastal resort of Versilia (just a hop from Florence). A local institution since the 1930s, the cafe has kept its retro style with custom made Formica tables, wicker chairs and archive Prada print wallpaper and curtains. The place just screams Dolce Vita and is the perfect place to sip a coffee and push a caprese around the plate.
Fiat 500 Spiaggina with Rattan seats
Talking of mid-century style, Barbie is not the only thing in pink this summer (despite the hype). We LOVE this custom-made version of the classic Fiat 500, created as a collaboration between Garage Italia and furniture brand Bonacina, with its trademark rattan seats, fabric roof and – get this! – ropes instead of doors. Naturally it is electric-powered, as befits the 21st century, but to be honest, it’s not something you are going to travel for miles in: it’s more a pop-to-the-beach kinda car. Beats a golf buggy any day though.
Telfar/Melissa Telly Jelly bag
Transparency is an oft-touted word in the fashion industry these days (referring to ethical and traceable manufacturing methods) but Telfar, in their collab with Brazilian footwear brand, have taken things literally. Their new Jelly Bag – made from sustainable Melflex material – is see-through, water-resistant and rather chic in a futuristic kind of way. There’s a matching heeled slide aimed at women but we think it’s a bit of a shame they didn’t also offer a more unisex style.
Longines Flagship Heritage Moon Phase
Yep, we know we don’t feature so many formal, classic watches. Blame Robin here: he is such a sports watch guy. Show him a sports watch and he goes bonkers. But a couple of days ago, we ran into the new release by the Swiss luxury brand, Longines. The new line, Flagship Heritage, comes in three variations with its design inspired by the brand’s models from the 50s. It integrates a sub-dial with both date and moon-phase complications which are reminiscent of the aesthetic elements of brands in a way higher price range. Considering its price of €3000, a case size of 38.5mm, which will fit perfectly on most wrists, and a power reserve of 72 hours, it’s really a great-looking dress watch.
NIGO named as the first Penfolds Creative Director
You probably noticed that we like a glass or two of wine here at The Editors but even we were a little confused by the news that Japanese design supremo Nigo had been appointed creative director at Penfolds, the Australian vineyard giant. Streetwear rosé? A couture Cabinet? What could it involve? So far it seems to be a series of animal portrait bottle labels for the brand’s One by Penfolds line and – of course – a clothing line tie-in. Not sure of the market for Penfold’s baseball jacket but we will try the shiraz…
Hart Bakery
Every neighbourhood in Copenhagen has its own favourite bakery (the bread in Denmark is sensational and people are quite rightly very fussy about it) but Hart seems to be going for city domination. Part of the noma group, the original site in Frederiksberg is a morning Instagram fulfilment centre for tourists and locals alike and spawned a branch in the industrial chic Holmen area. Last week their third bakery opened in the ever-popular hipster enclave of Kødbyen (Meatpacking District). Alongside their pastries, bread and coffee you really should call by for one of their amazing sausage rolls.
