What just happened?

Starting the new year with Dior monsters, dog treats and a new Scuba diver

Week 3.

Celine dog accessories

Worried that your dog missed out by not having something to open on Christmas morning? Fear not, Hedi Slimane has come up with the perfect stylish gift for a pooch with a new collection of dog accessories. No – he’s not doing trademark super skinny suits for terriers but rather really beautiful collars and leads in studded calfskin and dog carriers in the Triomphe logo canvas (with DOG helpfully printed on the side in case you forget what you are carrying). Most indulgent though is the double dog bowl holder and matching pooh-bag holder in leopard print canvas, surely designed with Elton John’s pet in mind.

LV Sandwich bag

The trend for ironic luxury bags started a while ago – remember the Balenciaga remake of the Ikea in-store shopper and, more recently, their leather version of hipster LA deli Erewhon’s paper bag – but now Louis Vuitton have joined in with an uber-lux sandwich bag. Designed as part of Pharrell William’s first collection, the slouchy orange bag can take quite a good-sized tuna mayo-filled bread roll and bag of potato chips before being folded over and fastened with a blue tab. Mercifully the appliqué logo makes sure no one mistakes your ‘price on application’ carrier for something Wolt just delivered…

Levi’s x Beams

The anniversary year for Levi’s might be over but the iconic jeans brand shows no sign of stopping its collabs. So popular was last summer’s partnership with Tokyo-based BEAMS that they have returned with a second version, this time doing a very baggy jacket and jeans set. The Super Wide V2 collection is based on original Levi’s garments from 1944 and comprises a Type 1 Trucker jacket with four spaced-out buttons and a big cinch-back belt on the back and a pair of voluminous jeans. Both have a double-width leatherette patch and a special orange tick selvedge.

Dior & Otani Workshop

Whilst not always convinced by the womenswear collections, we at The Editors very much like what Kim Jones is doing at Dior menswear and, after five years into the job as Creative Director, he is pushing the brand in a much cooler and more creative direction. As part of that drive, he has just collaborated with Japanese sculptor Otani Workshop to create a capsule collection that is youthful, fun and a little off-beat for such a bourgeois house. Featuring a cartoonish baby monster called Tanilla – like a junior version of Godzilla perhaps? – the Americana preppy styles also have a great scratchy version of the Dior logo. We particularly like the baseball jacket and red knitted sweater with the little fella sitting patiently on a chair in intarsia on the back.

Blancpain x Swatch Timepiece Draws Inspiration From the Moon

We already featured this collaboration in our news last September (jump back to revisit some facts), but while we were not the biggest fans of the colourways, the new one is different. To continue the collaboration and as a smart marketing move by brands in the same group, the new year starts with the new Ocean of Storms. Inspired by the Oceanus Procellarum (a vast ’sea’ on the Moon that covers more than 10% of the lunar surface), the case of 42mm is similar to the others but now comes in black bioceramic. Unlike MoonSwatch, this watch beats with an automatic movement with a power reserve of 90 hours. And its NATO-style strap is made of recycled fishing nets removed from our oceans. A big plus for that.
