We don’t talk enough about entry-level watches here at The Editors so let’s fix that and start with
G-SHOCK Caution Yellow
Casio is one of the best watch brands when it comes to affordable pieces: their G-Shock models have been here for decades and they still hold their popularity. Just imagine that Ed Sheeran wears one all the time, which, considering the fact that he is a huge watch collector and prioritises it over his great Pateks he is the one of a few to own a Tifanny Nautilus) definitely says something. Named “Caution Yellow,” the watch arrives in four iconic models, dressed in an inky black, accented by canary yellow adapted from pavement markings, tactile subway landings and city taxis. As with all the G-Shocks, we talk here about the “world’s toughest watch”, so it’s ready for any extreme activities too: rock climbing, dirt biking, extreme skiing, you name it.
Tudor Black Pelagos FXD
A couple of days ago, with a flurry of oysters, champagne and caviar (greatly appreciated by us on a quiet Thursday evening!) Tudor released the new black Pelagos FXD, inspired by their watches worn by US navy divers. It features a satin-brushed grade 2 titanium case of 42mm (same as the classic blue version) and a fully graduated bezel. Early Tudor watches were tested and evaluated for use by the navy, and the new FXD follows the same path. It comes on a strap with a “self-gripping fastening system” (read Velcro) and/or with a single-pass rubber strap with a traditional pin-buckle closure. While everybody is eyeing the brand’s most popular Black Bay line, Pelagos is a line where the brand defines itself and shows off some great modern do-it-all-diver options – and now with very appealing military inspiration! It’s definitely a good watch, although we might go for not so old Pelagos in the black 39 mm option, that’s a beaut!
Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms
Swatch did it again. After a really successful collaboration between two brands under the same group – Swatch and Omega – the brand comes up with yet another one. This time it is with Swiss luxury watchmaker, Blancpain, and presents a bio-ceramic take on one of the earliest and most respected dive watches, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Blancpain isn’t that well known, so this collaboration is a great move on how to celebrate the Diver Watch’s 70th anniversary. It comes in five ocean-themed colourways: beige, yellow-orange, blue, green and ice-white, with a very specific depth rating of 91 meters (which equates to exactly fifty fathoms – the depth back then to which it was safely possible to dive). What we like about this release is the fact that Swatch has made it automatic (but note that the mechanism can’t be serviced). It will probably not be as successful as the MoonSwatch, but it could be a fun watch for many.
The Longines HydroConquest GMT
It’s not a long time ago when we wrote about the Swiss watchmaker Longines. This time the brand introduces a diver watch with GMT function (a watch that features an additional 24-hour hand – shows two time zones at once) to their HydroConquest collection. Packed in a case of 41mm with a unidirectional ceramic bezel, it comes with four dial options, black or blue (rubber strap option), and green or brown (NATO-style strap option), all with a sunray finish (or “sunburst” finish – is defined by ultra-thin lines radiating from the dial’s centre). Same as the other watches in the line, it has 300 meters of water resistance and its movement offers you a 72-hour power reserve and silicon balance spring, which improves stability, performance, accuracy, and resistance to magnetic interferences and thermal fluctuations. Our pick would be definitely the brown or green option (hello Longines?!).
