Whisky tends to have a rather dusty, old-fashioned image, conjuring up recollections of Scottish castles and open fires on misty evenings for most people, so it’s interesting that The Macallan have opted for much more vibrant and modern imagery for the launch of their Time:Space collection. Even the name has a ‘Matrix vibe’ to it!
The first release is a double-chamber bottle, the inner section of which contains an 84-year-old vintage, put to bed back in 1940 during the early part of the Second World War. Surrounding that is a second chamber containing Time:Space Mastery, a more recent single malt whisky from 2018, the two together form a representation of past and present that is a central feature of the history of the two-century-old distillers. As the company is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, this special release is limited to just 200 bottles but don’t go rushing to the off-licence yet — the bottles can only be bought by invitation and cost somewhere in the region of that Scottish castle itself. ‘Luckily’ for the rest of us, the Time:Space Mastery is available to buy on its own, in a very contemporary circular bottle.
The Editors were lucky enough to be invited to a lavish anniversary dinner to celebrate the launch of the collection. Along with a bunch of tuxedo-ed whisky fans, we gathered at Hotel D’Angleterre in Copenhagen to enjoy cocktails, fabulous food, a virtuoso violinist and some sci-fi-inspired dancers. The 84-year-old whisky made an appearance to look at and Instagram but sadly not to taste but we were allowed to sample the Time:Space Mastery. Now imagine having a cocktail on that! We ended up toasting The Macallan a very happy 200th birthday with a couple of nightcaps at nearby Balthazar.
