Even if we don’t want to accept it, summer’s slowly ending. Gone are those long days and hangouts by the harbourside. But it also means that we can pull out our home blankets from a drawer, light up a favourite scented candle and watch a series from our list which we were postponing till the gloomy weather comes. If you happen to binge-watch everything or can’t find anything new and interesting, don’t worry: I have a few entertaining ones ready for you.
How To with John Willson
This is one of the weirdest docu-series around, but I love it. I was waiting for the new (and unfortunately last) season to be released and counting the days until its premiere. But what is it all about you might ask? John Willson, as the main character, who never goes anywhere without a camera shows us how to do things in the city of New York. And in doing so, he captures the weirdest, most awkward things happening in the city. It’s one of the most real, refreshing and funny documentary series currently on streaming platforms.
It’s a perfect Sunday (read hangover) go-to option for me. All three seasons stream on HBO.
Platonic
Don’t worry, Seth Rogen is not going to sell you his gadgets for smoking weed in this series (… and now you want to look it up, don’t you? Here it is then and thank us later), but rather he plays a “brewer dude”. “Platonic” provides a familiar perspective on the issue of whether two individuals of the opposite sex can just be best friends (well without “benefits” or any romance involved). The first episode felt a bit weird and stiff, but with each new episode, the chemistry between the two characters gets better. In my opinion, it’s well written without any of the annoying stereotypical treatment you would expect in such a genre. The show streams on Apple TV+.
Dave
Honestly, I was awaiting the new third (unfortunately again – the last) season for a long time and in the meantime re-watched the previous two. It’s a quirky, awkward and satisfyingly hilarious yet still smart show that showcases the daily life and struggles of a rapper. Dave, an actual artist known as “Lil Dicky” who plays himself and not only proves his impressive acting range, but also his clever and hard-hitting bars (The Editors’ note: music lyrics). While season one is just great, as is the second one, the last one even exceeded my expectations and I loved every moment of it. The show streams on HBO.
Bupkis
I know, I know … Pete Davidson. But what a pleasant surprise this show is! Bupkis is a well-written and acted show with a great cast (let’s name Joe Pesci, for example), which focuses on … you guessed it … Pete himself. And it finds a way to turn dark subject matter – such as his drug use – into something entertaining and watchable. That means you don’t need to be Pete’s fan to actually enjoy it. Give it a go, it streams on Sky Showtime.
Apart from these, I can also recommend the older series “High Maintenance” (streaming on HBO), “Dreaming Whilst Black” (streaming on BBC, Sky Showtime and Paramount+) and the newer “Colin from Accounts” (streaming on BBC).
