There is no need for an introduction to actor Ryan Gosling and also not for some of his iconic movies, such as “La La Land”, “Crazy Stupid Love” (maybe?!), “Blade Runner 2049” (for me) and most importantly, “Drive”. Would you believe it’s twelve years since it hit cinemas?
When it comes to promoting or partnering with brands, Ryan seems to be picky. In fact, he hasn’t shown up in many campaigns in his career until 2021, when he became TAG Heuer’s ambassador.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of TAG Heuer’s iconic Carrera watch and for that occasion, the brand not only introduced new watches to their most complete collection but also released a short campaign movie, entitled “The Chase for the Carrera”. In this, the brand pays homage to one of Gosling’s most iconic roles and celebrates the Carrera’s DNA – racing. And what other car would Ryan be driving here other than a Porsche?
TAG Heuer and Porsche have had a long partnership. Not only did they get inspired for their products by the famous Carrera Panamerica race, but they’ve since crossed over with a couple of collaborative timepieces. (The Editors’ note: the first TAG Heuer Carrera was introduced in 1963, the same year as Porsche 911 made its debut.)
Produced by David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool, Bullet Train), and filmed on the set of an actual upcoming Ryan movie, this short movie is a fun and entertaining take on a classic campaign.
Back to the watches, the newly redesigned TAG Heure’s Carrera Chronograph Glassbox comes in a midsize case of 39mm, with its doomed (“Glassbox”) sapphire crystal, with a power reserve of 80 hours and water resistance of 100m. Two versions of this model were released earlier this year with a blue dial or with a combination of a black dial with three contrasting silver counters. The 60th-anniversary version is the nicest one and comes now in a reversed option – with a silver sunray brushed dial and contrasting black counters (known as the Panda dial).
If a chronograph is not your thing, the TAG Heuer Carrera Date in a case size of 36mm might do the trick. This unisex watch offers new different colourful options while still retaining the racing-inspired vibes.
It’s a good step for TAG Heuer, as for me the previous Carreras seemed to be too big and somehow visually did not fit into its price range category. And I must say that TAG Heuer watches released this year are closer to my liking.
