Now that warmer, brighter weather has kicked in at home and many of us are starting to travel a bit more, it’s time to think of clothes that reflect that weekend-in-the-sun vibe. One style that works every year is an eternal winner: classic Riviera chic.
Think Alan Delon in Nice or Sean Connery in early Bond films and you get the idea. The recent Netflix series Ripley has also done its bit to make this look a late-spring hit and if it works for Andrew Scott, it works for us. Here are some of our suggestions to give it a contemporary twist.
You know we are always happy to look in the womenswear department, especially for trousers and this lovely pair of pleated baggy pants from Ralph Lauren would look just as great on men. And of course, off-white linen just screams Cote D’Azur.
We are still not into full-scale summer weather yet and you might need a jacket later in the evening. This Lardini Giacca Camicia overshirt is a halfway house between shirt and blouson so can be worn open over a t-shirt and then buttoned up should it get chilly after the sun-down martini.
A knitted top is so much chicer than a pique jersey one and this lovely example from NN.07 is versatile in that it can be worn as a shirt but also as a cardigan. The texture has a 50s vibe and the neutral colour can go with anything.
You might be walking along the Croisette but it’s maybe still too early for the beach so no need for a beach bag yet. Instead carry Marni’s very elegant tote – big enough for a book, some suntan lotion and your sunglasses plus a bit of spare room should you go shopping.
The temptation with Riviera chic is to go for sandals or loafers and, whilst they look great too, you can give the look a modern touch with either a flat-sole sneaker or a quirky version of a snaffle shoe like these funky slides from Melvin & Hamilton. You can even wear socks to add a bit of colour.
