In this series, we will look closely at the watches we’ve had a chance to wear and try for a week, to see how they fit and how they work with our style. We liked them in the pictures and now we had a chance to try them out.
Even with all the possibilities and with all models of sports watches on the market, it’s still not easy to find a model which isn’t slightly similar to others or a model that plenty of your friends already have. However, there are some here and there and the watch I had on my wrist for a week is one of them.
The Nomos Club Sport Neomatik has been on my radar since its release, especially the 37mm version with the green dial. And recently, the German watchmaker Nomos came up with three different dial colours for this line – tabac dark brown, brown ember and smoke grey. And that’s when it gets interesting…
Established in 1992 and based in Glashütte – a small centre of German horology – Nomos offers watches inspired by the Bauhaus movement and tries to make something different with their minimalist approach. They might not be known by many, but they are one of the largest manufacturers of mechanical timepieces in Germany.
Most of their designs have never been my thing, but a large amount of international prizes for design proves that this watchmaker is doing something good. You know me, I am just a basic sports watch guy… With the Club Sport Neomatik model, they, however, hit the spot. This watch has a leaner, dressier and more versatile look than lots of other sports watches. For me, it’s the sunburst finish of the galvanised dial, combined with the brand’s characteristic font for the numerals, which stands out. And the small seconds counter with a snailed background just adds to its unique look.
I am not going here into specific details about what “beats” inside the fully polished case, but let’s just mention that the in-house movement (a movement/calibre developed and manufactured by the brand itself), the brand’s signature swing system, is highly precise and efficient. You can count on a power reserve up to 43 hours. And of course, you can dive with it too, down to 200 meters…
The previous Club Sport Neomatik came in 3 sizes: 37, 40 and 42mm. The new three colourway comes in 39mm (39.5mm to be precise). For me, the dark brown “tabac” and light-brown-orange “ember” are absolutely great lookers.
Amongst all the “standard” white and black dials, there is something beautiful about having a watch with a brown dial. No matter if it’s summer or cold winter, no matter if you are dressed up (in whatever colour) or about to hit the gym in a tracksuit, it just looks great on the wrist.
Is it the right size? While the specs are saying 39mm, it felt bigger on my wrist. It’s not that visible in the photos, but it appeared that way when wearing it. So if you have a smaller/mid-sized wrist as I do, maybe the 37mm would feel better. Unluckily, it does not come in these beautiful colourways.
In the end, would I buy one? I love the colour and I had a great time with this watch, but I wish it had been introduced also in the 37mm version. That size would work for me.
No matter what colour and if either 39mm or 37mm versions fit you better, this model could be a perfect all-rounder for many, especially if you are looking for something different than everybody else is having on the wrist. And with its price tag of around 3k euros, it could be an easier decision to make.
But for now, Nomos, can you also do these colours in 37mm?
