When the weather turns as it is now, I tend to watch more movies. There is nothing more cozy or ‘hyggelig’ than a warm blanket, a cup of tea (or hot toddy if you want) and a good movie on a screen. In my case, with a movie projector, which I can only recommend and makes the experience a whole different (we featured one here in our list). While we get a lot of movies suggested on all our favourite mainstream streaming platforms, sometimes we overlook those which can bring us more than entertainment. They can let us think, educate or even lead us into topics which usually we try to ignore or overlook. Here is a list of them.

I ran into this movie by accident and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a dialogue-oriented movie set in a taxi which takes a long ride. All the conversations touch on generational differences, analogue and digital communications, and daddy issues. While opinions shared might not be to everyone’s taste, Daddio thrives on the authentic performance of the two main actors, offering a thought-provoking and intimate exploration of human connections and showing how sometimes interesting and almost life-opening conversations can happen in the most unexpected places.
The Outrun

What an authentic movie this was! Based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir of the same name, this movie takes you on a journey through addiction and how it can affect your life, with two intertwined stories that reflect past and present, each revealing themselves piece by piece. It deliberately reflects the confusion and displacement of the main character through a lyrical and free-form structure that is filled with metaphors and moods. It leads you down many different paths of wrong and right that ultimately bring you to the same place…
Memory

A drama of two persons with damaged memories seeking solace, ‘Memory’ is a subtle movie with a raw view into the pain and trauma people can carry and a glimpse of hope they can get. It’s a very real take on how two people, with their struggles that keep them from being ‘complete people’, can find comfort in each other. So if you want to see a movie about this subject with no gimmicks and some of the most vulnerable acting, this is for you.
His Three Daughters

‘His Three Daughters’ is a beautiful family drama about bonds and sisterhood where the key elements include fine acting with excellent dialogues and the development of each character that keeps your attention from the beginning till the very end and lets you slowly understand the life difficulties each one of them. It confronts the core realities of life, death, forgiveness and compassion without hesitation. A great dramedy about three very different personalities. There are few movies that stand out but this is one of them. Streaming on Netflix.
