Festive season

You’ve got the invite, you know the location and time but what are you going to wear? It’s probably the most asked question to self during this party season, especially as dress codes become more relaxed – even black tie is up for interpretation these days. Unless it’s a serious tuxedo situation, we prefer to use Christmas and New Year as an excuse to wear something a bit special but still within the framework of our own personal style.

This could be something with print, something that shows a bit of skin or maybe plays with texture in some way. Here are a few things that will make it to our possible options rail until the actual evening when, at the last minute, we look at what mood we are in before making the final decision.

Filippa K Wide trousers

Party dressing tends to be about the top half usually (especially if it’s a dinner where you will be sat at a table) so get trousers that will work through the rest of the year. This pleated pair of straight-leg pants is a great example.

J. Lindeberg shirt

If you have the confidence for it, don’t be afraid of showing a bit of skin in a subtle way. And if a full-on nipple is too much, you can wear this open mesh shirt over a singlet.

J. Lindeberg open collar knit

We love that this is both casual and dressed up. The knitted style keeps things laid back but the open structure makes it a bit slinky and evening too. You could also probably bring this out for your summer vacation.

MM6 Maison Margiela leather jacket

A great yet unconventional option for the evening, this jacket plays with two textures - canvas and leather - to be subtly interesting yet still relaxed. Dress it down with a monochrome top to be totally chic.

Thierry Lasry sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses afterdark is either totally out or rather ironic. It’s your call!  But if you going to do it, don’t go aviatorfor goodness sake - stick to those that are more ‘tinted’ than full-onanti-paparazzi.

Sandro printed shirt

Prints can be great for evening but keep them subdued in winter. The placed print of this gives it an elegant retro vibe and the viscose fabric gives it a sheen which keeps it well away from barbecue-wear.

Paul Smith trousers

Another pair of black trousers but this one a loose and tapered style. The elastic at the cuffs adds a sporty touch which can be a great way of making an evening look more downbeat and less uptight.

NN07 Jacket

We love the Japanese workwear influence of this cardigan jacket. It looks great with a t-shirt and jeans during the day but put with a white shirt and more formal pants and it could even do the red carpet - just the kind of versatility we need in our wardrobe.
