Spend half a day in Copenhagen and you soon realise that it’s probably true that Danes are the biggest consumers of coffee per capita in the world: coffee bars are EVERYWHERE. From scruffy local joints to slick mini-chains, they reflect Copenhageners’ love for good quality products, noma-style precision in making and of course the national obsession with hygge. As readers will know, Robin is a coffee-obsessive, seemingly incapable of lasting more than thirty minutes without a cup so you know his recommendations will hit the mark. Graham of course tags along for a cup of tea…

Alice Cph

Markmandsgade 1, Amagerbro

Situated in up-and-coming Amagerbro, this is a place with good coffee and pastries but also ice cream during the summer months. It can get very busy but if there’s no room and it’s an appropriate time of day, you can always go to Gensyn, one of our favourite bars, which is very close by.

April coffee

Pilestræde 37, City centre

Be prepared that this bar is not only about brewing good coffee but also about the whole geekiness of the preparation. The decor is gorgeous too (lots of Finn Juhl furniture). The coffee might be on the expensive side but the baristas know their stuff and will tell you all about it if you are interested.

Coffee Collective

Jægersborggade 57, Nørrebro

Part of another small cafe chain with several branches across the city, this Nørrebro location is our favourite. It’s close by the park so is particularly lovely in spring or summer when you can get a cup to go, sit on a bench outside and watch the world go by. It’s also close to foodie street Jægersborggade with all its little shops, bars and restaurants - a great place to wander down after a walk through Assistens Kirkegård.

Darcy's Kaffe

Rantzausgade 2, Nørrebro

Sadly not run by a dashing romantic hero of the same name, Darcy is another local joint where people meet for breakfast or stop for something to drink mid-dog walk. The coffee is great as is the atmosphere and the morning goods and pastries are pretty fine too. Laptops aren’t allowed so the emphasis is clearly on relaxation and being sociable.

La Cabra

Møntergade 3A, City centre

Situated in the city centre, La Cabra is a concept store with a cafe attached. Expect a mix of locals and tourists - it gets pretty packed in here. If you sit by the counter you can admire the baristas techniques, maybe with a BMO on the side. And if it’s afternoon, why not go grab a glass of wine at the neighbouring Vinoria Lilo when you have finished your coffee?

Original Coffee

Store Kongensgade 124, City Centre

This is a small chain with several places across the city - all of which are excellent - but we are mostly found at the slightly quieter Store Kongensgade branch (though the one by the lakes is lovely in sunny weather when you can take your cup to go). We often go particularly for breakfast as the BMO and overnight oats are great with a cup of hangover-curing coffee.

Orsa coffee

Vesterbrogade 46, Vesterbro

Whether you are an early bird grabbing a coffee en route to work or taking it a bit slower during the day, Orsa is a great place for hand brew or filter and also has a lovely atmosphere. They play good music too and serve sweet or savoury pastries on the side but beware: as the sign says, ‘No f%&king laptops!’

Prolog Cafe

Høkerboderne 16, Vesterbro

The fashionistas favourite but loved by locals too, Prolog is in the hip Meat Packing District (or Kødbyen if you can get your tongue around the Danish word). Only room for a few sat indoors, most people spill out onto the tables outside (whatever the weather) before picking up a pastry at Hart or nipping to V1, eighteen or Gether Contemporary to see some art.
