Brunch spots.

Brunch is a slightly odd concept – not quite a breakfast and not quite a lunch, but sort of in the sweet spot in between. Originally considered to be the preserve of New Yorkers in the 1980s, it was invented by the British in the 19th Century as a post-early-hunt meal that started around 11.00.

Nowadays it’s much loved by groups of late-teen girls wanting to buy into the whole Sex in the City vibe but actually can be a lovely way to spend a couple of hours, especially at the weekend, when you can’t be bothered to make breakfast and are a bit late anyway. Needless to say, in the world epicentre of hygge with an additional layer of the noma effect, brunch in Copenhagen is a big thing.

Amator

Nordre Frihavnsgade 7, Østerbro

Over in Østerbro is the much-hyped (and much loved by local yummy mummies) Amator, another breakfast restaurant. As befits the location, this is all blond wood and bright yellow accents making it a lovely place to drop by and maybe make a few IG posts but stay for the food, whipped up by an ex-noma chef, which includes amazing omelettes and lemon tart (keeping with the colour theme).

Cafe Dyrehaven

Sønder Boulevard 72, Vesterbro

Cafe Dyrehaven is an old-school working-class place that has been very gently upgraded whilst still retaining its original charm. It’s actually open all day as a popular beer and natural wine spot but we love it for a late-ish brunch of smørrebrød with mushrooms or eggs benedict. Particularly lovely to sit outside on a sunny weekend.

Cafe Kaf

​​​​Birkegade 21, Nørrebro

A cosy little bakery tucked away in Nørrebro, this place is entirely vegan which obviously precludes poached eggs for your brunch but instead, they offer their own sour-bread toast with vegan cheese, granola and the obligatory avocado. Otherwise, stick to the delicious pastries and coffee.

Kalaset

Vendersgade 16, City centre

Another place that is open until late but does a great brunch is Kalaset near the city centre. This cosy cafe puts a North African twist on scrambled eggs with the addition of Moroccan sausage and spices things up with aubergine and za’atar hummus on sourdough. Go there for a change to all that avocado toast.

Sonny

Frederiksberg Allé 12, Frederiksberg

This brunch-and-lunch venue has a famous location in the centre of Copenhagen that is the go-to for the fashion crowd who love the green frittata but we prefer the second branch in Frederiksberg which is a bit less frantic and has better seating. It centres around classics like scrambled eggs with salmon and porridge but there is also a harissa breakfast for those wanting to start the day with a bit of a kick.

Studio X Kitchen

Dronningens Tværgade 52, City centre

Situated in the beautiful mid-century modernist Dronningens Tværgade complex designed by Kay Fisker, this cafe is another IG favourite with its very photogenic brunches of omelettes, bread-and-cheese and salad. Definitely one for the design set.

The Sixteen Twelve

Jægersborggade 8, Nørrebro

A more upmarket alternative in Nørrebro, The Sixteen Twelve is a brunch restaurant which means reservations are a good idea. When there you can treat yourself to everything you would want mid-morning: from French toast and eggs benedict to stracciatella or shakshuka. If they are all a bit full on, then choose from their small plates menu for next-level buns and muffins.
