Where we go as locals…

The food and drink scene in Copenhagen is insane. Call it ‘the noma effect’ but the interest in restaurants, bars and cafes has grown exponentially over the past decade with a dizzying number of options at all levels. Be it hipster breakfast, working coffee, casual lunch, bar food or very fine dining, you can eat and drink VERY well in this city. But it takes some research and planning: the best places are often outside the city centre and reservations are usually necessary. This is where we come in: we have lived here long enough to consider ourselves locals and we eat and drink A LOT. So here are some of our insider tips on what we consider the best in class.

Bageriet BRØD

Enghave Pl. 7, Vesterbro

This is Graham’s local favourite and he swears by the dark, dense bread though he tries to only buy at the weekend to keep himself at least slightly in shape. Apart from the loaves, their sandwiches on rye bread are fantastic and it’s impossible to resist the gooey chocolate brownies.

We have been fans of the original location of Bird in Frederiksberg since it opened but perhaps we like this one even more. Bright, open plan and with good people-watching seating outside, this is the perfect place for an early evening negroni. The interior design of the place is beautiful - all blond wood and steel - and the prices are so good you will probably stay for another…

Grimal

Istedgade 128, Vesterbro

Little sister to Frank and Polly - a duo much loved by the city's foodies - this casual take on a brasserie serves the cuisine-de-jour of (relatively) simple French dishes. Now established as our local favourite, you'll regularly find us sat at the bar eating oysters, gougères and perfectly cooked rabbit vol-au-vents. Book well ahead - this place has become very popular.

Store Kongensgade 124, City Centre

This is a small chain with several places across the city - all of which are excellent - but we are mostly found at the slightly quieter Store Kongensgade branch (though the one by the lakes is lovely in sunny weather when you can take your cup to go). We often go particularly for breakfast as the BMO and overnight oats are great with a cup of hangover-curing coffee.

Bagerstræde 2, Vesterbro

Whilst too much of Copenhagen has fallen prey to the nature wine phenomenon, if (like us) you’d rather have something that doesn’t smell like farm pond water, try the shabby chic Pio Vin, it’s a very Danish experience - half wine store/half bar with old mismatched furniture, candles and friendly and knowledgeable staff. Grab a plate of charcuterie and cheese to go with that glass and then realise you should have just bought the bottle in the first place.

Be prepared that this bar is not only about brewing good coffee but also about the whole geekiness of the preparation. The decor is gorgeous too (lots of Finn Juhl furniture). The coffee might be on the expensive side but the baristas know their stuff and will tell you all about it if you are interested.

La Cabra

Møntergade 3A, City centre

Situated in the city centre, La Cabra is a concept store with a cafe attached. Expect a mix of locals and tourists - it gets pretty packed in here. If you sit by the counter you can admire the baristas techniques, maybe with a BMO on the side. And if it’s afternoon, why not go grab a glass of wine at the neighbouring Vinoria Lilo when you have finished your coffee?

Sct. Peders Bageri & Konditori

Sankt Peders Stræde 29, City centre

This one is seriously old school, having been founded in 1652 (it’s the oldest in the city). It’s on a cute back street in the city centre and is still very classic with locals treating themselves to traditional pastries under cut glass chandeliers. Robin used to live close by and visited perhaps too often so, for the sake of his waistline, it was good he moved.

Vendersgade 16, City centre

Another place that is open until late but does a great brunch is Kalaset near the city centre. This cosy cafe puts a North African twist on scrambled eggs with the addition of Moroccan sausage and spices things up with aubergine and za’atar hummus on sourdough. Go there for a change to all that avocado toast.

Studio X Kitchen

Dronningens Tværgade 52, City centre

Situated in the beautiful mid-century modernist Dronningens Tværgade complex designed by Kay Fisker, this cafe is another IG favourite with its very photogenic brunches of omelettes, bread-and-cheese and salad. Definitely one for the design set.

Ny Østergade 21, City centre

Most of the more interesting restaurants in Copenhagen are in the more residential neighbourhoods of Vesterbro and Nørrebro with the city centre places leaning towards tourists and business guys. An exception though is this relative newcomer situated a stone’s throw from the busy shopping streets but with the air of a local favourite. Despite its young age, it feels like it has been there for years. Popular with both ladies-who-lunch and the fashion set, it serves good quality Italian food in a busy and buzzy room.

The name of this joint, along with its beautiful design, places it in the Wine section here but in fact it could easily fit in the bistro part too as the bar food they offer is sensational. Seating only 18 people at window seats or a communal table, the extensive wine selection is paired with sharing plates of Indian-influenced but very innovative food. No reservations so be prepared to wait for a table (but it’s worth it).

Lille Blå Vinbar

Esplanaden 3, City center

Little sibling of Ved Stranden, this bar is the natural wine option in the family. Situated in upmarket Esplanaden, it lives up to its name with Yves Klein blue-painted walls inside though to be honest it’s not that small compared to many in the city. The haphazard use of wine boxes as furniture adds to its ramshackle appeal.

Rosforth & Rosforth

Knippelsbrogade 10, City center

Another example of ‘it really shouldn’t be charming but is’ is Rosforth & Rosforth, a wine merchant/store situated directly under the Knippelsbro bridge that also serves glass or bottles of wine to drink by the water’s edge. VERY relaxed, it generally is only a day/late afternoon place but that can change depending on the vibe. It’s served as everything from a fashion show venue to a pop-up location for Noma if you need anything else to underline its coolness factor.

Ved Stranden 10

Ved Stranden 10, City center

Ved Stranden 10 is a beautiful wine bar in itself at any time of the year, but it’s particularly lovely in summer when you can drink outside not only at a table but also grab glasses and sit by the canal. With beautiful views of Christiansborg (the Parliament building) and passing boats, this is a particularly charming way to spend a late afternoon. And the wine list is stellar too.

This place has been through quite a few different concepts over the years but finally seems to have settled itself into a successful natural wine bar that also serves cheese, bread, and pasta to help soak it up. A wide selection by the glass and city centre location means it is a popular after-office location.

Havnegade 35, City centre

Now, this is not a cocktail bar, but we felt like including it. This one is a real step back in time to old ‘pub’ days when you could smoke indoors, grab ‘a couple of cold ones from kassen’, chat with locals and even play a game of billiards. It’s definitely one for late nights when you can put your favourite record on the jukebox and drink a few beers whilst putting the world to rights.

Tordenskjoldsgade 15, City centre

Hotel bars can be a bit hit and miss: either they are filled with bored businessmen on expense accounts or, if they get it right, they convey an atmosphere of chance meetings and illicit affairs. Tata, located in the upscale Sanders Hotel, falls into the latter bracket with a jazzy, decadent vibe that is just right for sipping martinis and nibbling olives. The knowledgeable bar staff can shake you something classic or experimental, making the bar a great city-centre option.

With its La Cabra coffee bar, this store is the hub of these narrow streets and is always busy. After your latte, grab a few pieces of the brand’s selection of wardrobe staples, all made with sustainability in the mindset.

Gammel Mønt 2

A real favourite at The Editors, Berner Kuhl’s tiny store is the go-to for pared down minimal menswear in truly beautiful fabrics (designer Frederik is a self confessed textile nerd). This is a very elevated slant on local style.

An atmospheric store centred around the brand’s own collection of relaxed classics, urban workwear and wardrobe favourites. They also stock a carefully chosen selection of other similar collections including Kapital (the only stockist in Denmark).

Henrik Vibskov

Gammel Mønt 14

The multi-discipline local hero Henrik VIbskov has a well established store here stocking the likes of JW Anderson, Issey Mikaye and Maison Margiela but treat yourself by rifling through the graphic knits, colourful jacquards and quirky prints from Vibskov’s own whimsical collections for the real fun pieces.

OK so these guys are Norwegian not Danish but they are friendly Scandi neighbours so we will give them a shout out for their funny cave-like shop full of great knits, cool outerwear and witty accessories.

Møntergade 3C

Purveyors of beautifully made Scandinavian menswear that celebrates great fabric and understated design, mfpen has finally got its own home in an increasingly buzzing Møntergade. Expect cool tailoring with a bit of edge.

Gammel Mønt 7

One of Denmark’s breakout menswear brands, NN07 have been producing interesting yet wearable pieces for nearly two decades now. The store is beautifully designed too.

Whether you are an early bird grabbing a coffee en route to work or taking it a bit slower during the day, Orsa is a great place for hand brew or filter and also has a lovely atmosphere. They play good music too and serve sweet or savoury pastries on the side but beware: as the sign says, ‘No f%&king laptops!’

Høkerboderne 16, Vesterbro

The fashionistas favourite but loved by locals too, Prolog is in the hip Meat Packing District (or Kødbyen if you can get your tongue around the Danish word). Only room for a few sat indoors, most people spill out onto the tables outside (whatever the weather) before picking up a pastry at Hart or nipping to V1, eighteen or Gether Contemporary to see some art.

Sønder Boulevard 72, Vesterbro

Cafe Dyrehaven is an old-school working-class place that has been very gently upgraded whilst still retaining its original charm. It’s actually open all day as a popular beer and natural wine spot but we love it for a late-ish brunch of smørrebrød with mushrooms or eggs benedict. Particularly lovely to sit outside on a sunny weekend.

Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar

Gasværksvej 21, Vesterbro

If you fancy a bit of low-key but very authentic Japanese dining, Jah Izakaya is hard to beat. Styled as an izakaya - a sort of Japanese local pub for casual food - this is always busy, always buzzy, and the food is delicious. It’s famous for its fried chicken, but our favourite option is to go for the full chef’s choice omakase menu, sat at the bar with some Japanese beer (or German white wine) to wash it down.

Sønder Blvd. 54, Vesterbro

Graham's favourite, as it's 100m distance from his apartment (but you can find one more in Vesterbro and another one in Nørrebro), is another place which serves antipasti, a set meal of around seven or eight small dishes. The menu centres mainly around vegetables and fish so expect the likes of octopus carpaccio, scallops, bitter greens and salty baccala – it’s a world away from spag bol and garlic bread.

Vesterbrogade 51, Vesterbro

Small, crowded and always packed, this bistro has been a huge hit since it opened its doors in 2023. Nominally an Italian restaurant, it has hints of French cooking too - like an Italian in Nice perhaps - and the atmosphere too is reminiscent of a much-loved local: the sort of place you would want to eat midweek when you can’t be bothered to cook. Its success means such spontaneity is difficult but in good weather when tables spill out into the pretty square, the chance of a walk-in improves. Try the tasting menu to get a real idea of how good the kitchen is.

Oehlenschlaegersgade 5, Vesterbro

Situated in the old location of Italodisco and run by the same team, this instead leans into the owner’s Turkish heritage, but in the same tasting menu format. Expect fresh, elevated meze, interesting takes on grilled meat and fish and the obligatory sweet desserts. The atmosphere is lively and, as you would expect from the inspired name, the soundtrack is fantastic.

Dannebrogsgade 53, Vesterbro

Basically a hut below a church in a scruffy square much favoured by dog walkers, this shouldn’t be anything special but somehow it gets just the right vibe and crowd. Very local, very mixed in age and very welcoming, this is a firm favourite of Graham in particular. There’s a short wine list by the glass or bottle, plus a couple of cocktails and beers so order something and sit at one of the long Berlin-style tables or on a wall or bench in the park itself.

Istedgade 61, Vesterbro

For years this tiny space took specialisation to the next level and served only Argentinian wine but in the past years has loosened up to offer a well-selected list of other nationalities too. The bleacher-style seating means it's better for small groups but there are bigger tables outside where you can take in the lively Istedgade street scene.

Jægersborggade 57, Nørrebro

Part of another small cafe chain with several branches across the city, this Nørrebro location is our favourite. It’s close by the park so is particularly lovely in spring or summer when you can get a cup to go, sit on a bench outside and watch the world go by. It’s also close to foodie street Jægersborggade with all its little shops, bars and restaurants - a great place to wander down after a walk through Assistens Kirkegård.

Darcy's Kaffe

Rantzausgade 2, Nørrebro

Sadly not run by a dashing romantic hero of the same name, Darcy is another local joint where people meet for breakfast or stop for something to drink mid-dog walk. The coffee is great as is the atmosphere and the morning goods and pastries are pretty fine too. Laptops aren’t allowed so the emphasis is clearly on relaxation and being sociable.

A cosy little bakery tucked away in Nørrebro, this place is entirely vegan which obviously precludes poached eggs for your brunch but instead, they offer their own sour-bread toast with vegan cheese, granola and the obligatory avocado. Otherwise, stick to the delicious pastries and coffee.

The Sixteen Twelve

Jægersborggade 8, Nørrebro

A more upmarket alternative in Nørrebro, The Sixteen Twelve is a brunch restaurant which means reservations are a good idea. When there you can treat yourself to everything you would want mid-morning: from French toast and eggs benedict to stracciatella or shakshuka. If they are all a bit full on, then choose from their small plates menu for next-level buns and muffins.

Bar Moro

Blegdamsvej 36, Nørrebro

Placed on a rather unassuming thoroughfare in Nørrebro, this isn’t really somewhere that you would happen to walk past, but Bar Moro is really worth a short diversion. Decorated (or rather undecorated) in typical Copenhagen hygge style, the place is buzzing without feeling cramped, with beautiful cosy lighting and the air of having been there forever. Food is eclectic, very well considered and reasonably priced (the oysters with tomato water in particular were sensational), and there is an excellent offering of wine and cocktails.

Most definitely a beacon for natural wine lovers, this small neighbourhood bar in Nørrebro works also as a deli and serves snacks alongside the large array of low-intervention wines. Everything is locally sourced and mostly unique here.

This basement bar gives top hospitality on a high seat with its passion for agave spirits. Located in Robin’s favourite Nørrebro, Barking Dog has been at the forefront of the Copenhagen cocktail scene for over a decade and is a great place to broaden your knowledge of this specialist field of drinks. We have been there more times than we should have…

This bakery/cafe was the tipping point that made Robin decide to move to Copenhagen a few years back and he’s a regular there still. Plus their cube pistachio-filled croissant is his son’s favourite. Again there are multiple branches but our fave is in buzzing Nordhavn.

Juno The Bakery

Århusgade 48, Osterbro

Started by an ex noma chef (what isn’t these days?), Juno is the bakery of choice of Østerbro’s yummy mummies. Insanely popular for its bread but also known for fantastic cardamom rolls that baker Emil Glaser remembers from his Swedish childhood. The queue stretches down the street at weekends.

Nordre Frihavnsgade 7, Østerbro

Over in Østerbro is the much-hyped (and much loved by local yummy mummies) Amator, another breakfast restaurant. As befits the location, this is all blond wood and bright yellow accents making it a lovely place to drop by and maybe make a few IG posts but stay for the food, whipped up by an ex-noma chef, which includes amazing omelettes and lemon tart (keeping with the colour theme).

Flere Fugle Bageri & Pizzabar

Rentemestervej 57, Nordvest

Situated in an old garage in what is becoming a bona-fide design district in Nordvest Copenhagen, Flere Fugle is the epitome of the urban Copenhagen vibe. Breakfast to dinner? Tick. Natural wine list? Natch. On-site bakery, attractive staff and industrial but hyggelig decor? Gotcha! The result is very popular, very cool and serves great pastries, coffee and pizza. And if you feel inspired to try it all yourself, they run occasional workshops on how to make the perfect cinnamon bun or sour-dough bread.

Frank’s Kro

Fredensgade 11A, Osterbro

Irony in the restaurant world is a very difficult feat to pull off but Frank’s Kro manages it in style. Fresh from a Michelin-starred kitchen, the chef and owner applies the same skill to very traditional Danish food and produces it with a great sense of humour. Expect prawn cocktails, frikadelle and, of course, roast pork served exactly as they should be in a room that looks like it was last decorated in 1974. Everything tastes great, the wine is excellent and the service is utterly charming.

Technically its own municipality. Quieter, more residential, some excellent spots if you know where to look.

Frederiksberg Allé 12, Frederiksberg

This brunch-and-lunch venue has a famous location in the centre of Copenhagen that is the go-to for the fashion crowd who love the green frittata but we prefer the second branch in Frederiksberg which is a bit less frantic and has better seating. It centres around classics like scrambled eggs with salmon and porridge but there is also a harissa breakfast for those wanting to start the day with a bit of a kick.

Gl. Kongevej 86A, Frederiksberg

Situated on happening Frederiksberg street Gammel Kongvej, Alf is a newcomer that is already getting a lot of attention. Serving well-prepared (though small) dishes such as smoked eel with enoki mushrooms, fried cod with turnips and a good selection of vegetarian plates, the vibe is laid back and cosy. Ask to sit in the front room with its folksy decorations or at the bar rather than the back room which is a bit social Siberia...

Bar Amore

Gl. Kongevej 74D, Frederiksberg

A relative newcomer to the increasingly interesting Gammel Kongevej food and wine scene, Bar Amore lives up to its name. Quite a favourite with the fashion and creative crowd, it’s an airy, light-filled space with an open kitchen and a very welcoming vibe. We love to book seats at the high, communal bar table and order plates of truly delicious pasta (the linguine with garlic and chilli is gorgeous), seasonal leaves and very good meatballs.

Piola Pastificio

Thorvaldsensvej 2c, Frederiksberg

The clue is in the title: this place only serves pasta in various forms as the main course. But it’s sensational, homemade, beautifully cooked pasta, so we ain't gonna argue. There are usually four or five different versions ranging from spaghetti with seafood to fabulous agnolotti del plin (small, meat-filled parcels) with a handful of appetisers and one or two desserts, all served up in a tiny room in a quiet neighbourhood. Sit at the bar with a glass or two of Barbaresco and you won’t want to leave.

Sans Souci

Madvigs Allé 15, Frederiksberg

An old neighbourhood favourite that caused outrage when it closed down after 120 years has reopened quietly and confidently to become a favourite with the media crowd and well-heeled locals. Serving a mix of classic French bistro dishes and Danish smørrebrød depending on the time of day, the vibe is relaxed and easygoing but with classical training in the kitchen. It’s a particularly lovely place to have a long lunch with a bottle of Sancerre.

Less obvious than Vesterbro, more local for it. La Banchina by the water is reason enough to come. Everything else is a bonus.

Situated in up-and-coming Amagerbro, this is a place with good coffee and pastries but also ice cream during the summer months. It can get very busy but if there’s no room and it’s an appropriate time of day, you can always go to Gensyn, one of our favourite bars, which is very close by.

Galionsvej 41, Holmen

This small chain is part of the noma group itself and found international fame after being name-checked on The Bear. The original location is in Frederiksberg and still draws crowds of tourists wanting to Instagram their breakfast but the location in Holmen is particularly beautiful. Their sausage rolls with chicken skin topping are to die for.

Lille Bakery

Lille Bakery Refshalevej 213B, Refshaleøen

This place is known as much for the lovely lunches they make and serve in a two-level industrial space out in Refshaleøen but even if you don’t stop to eat, it’s worth popping in to buy a loaf of bread. They specialise in sourdough bread but also do great cinnamon buns.

Frankrigsgade 15, Amager

Out in residential Amager, this place defines itself as a wine bodega so expect an unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere though, as it offers mainly natural wine, it attracts a hip crowd too. The small plates of food are good too - especially the tinned sardines served with crusty bread.

Refshalevej 141, Amager

Hip and very cute, this is a cool spot perched on the edge of the harbour in the former industrial area of Refshaleøen. Stretch out in your speedos on one of the wooden jetties and dip in the water when you get too hot. There’s also an onsite sauna for chillier days. It’s been discovered by tourists now but is still super popular with locals too.

Palma de Mallorca

There are many places we love to return to, but for Robin, the place at the top of the list has to be Palma de Mallorca. Just about three hours from Copenhagen, and not much more from anywhere else in Europe, the city makes for a perfect prolonged weekend getaway.

Many visitors touch down in Palma only to head straight to their favourite or suggested resorts, missing the city itself with the cobbled streets of the atmospheric old town, its impressive monuments, museums, galleries, and vibrant food scene.

Surrounded by the Mediterranean, this easily accessible capital offers a melting pot of cultures and historic influences. Having visited Palma at least twice a year for some time, Robin takes you through a prolonged weekend in the city as he experiences it.
