Best leather fragrances

According to Robin’s nose

Having a well-balanced leather scent in their fragrance collection is a must for almost anyone. Leather scents, which have become more popular in the last couple of years, are very versatile and when well balanced, they can be worn for almost any occasion. Leathery notes can serve as a wonderful building block for a more complex scent. They not only work well with spicy, woody and tobacco notes but with fruits and florals too… spicy cardamom or jasmine to name the most common ones.

One interesting note is that leather actually doesn’t exist naturally. It’s therefore created through a combination of several ingredients, such as birch tar, saffron and others.

But enough nerdiness, here are the best 5 leather fragrances you can find on the market at the moment.

Tom Ford – Ombré Leather EdP

A modern interpretation of leather scent, where leathery notes remind me of a Nappa jacket. It is balanced with the warmth of cardamon and softened with white jasmine and light notes of raspberries.

If you get a chance to try this scent and wear it the whole year for almost any occasion, as I do, you’ll learn why I think Ombré Leather is the best fragrance release of the last decade and why is about the time to give it a go too.

If you ever tried Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather and it felt a bit too much, then it will be Ombré Leather you’ll love.

Louis Vuitton – Ombre Nomade

This might be one of the best scents in the rose-oud-leather group. It is a dark, deep and sensual smooth scent, where the rose and raspberry notes balance well the oud and prevent it from getting too intense whilst giving it a really nice light sweetness.

Ombre Nomade is packed with aromas. It might be too intense for some for daily wear, but for occasional use, it’s a wonderful scent. So in case, you’re looking for a strong scent, with very good longevity, this is the one.

Marc-Antoine Barrois – Ganymede

This fragrance takes you on a sci-fi trip to space. It’s a unique cool mineral scent brightened up by a warm combination of saffron and suede leather notes. It’s rich but very smooth and clean smelling.

If you want something really unique, this could be the scent you are looking for.

Matiere Premiere – Falcon Leather

One of the heaviest scents on the list. The high quality smoky leather notes are amplified by birch tar and slowly transform into a marvellous combination of saffron, benzoin and Spanish labdanum which gives it a sweet, woody and amber touch. Falcon Leather wears the best during colder days and in evenings, especially because of its intensity.

It’s another strong scent on the list with very good longevity. But if you did not try leathery scents yet, look for a different one in this list. This might be too much for you.

Hermes – Violette Volynka

This is the newest fragrance on this list, released last year. It’s an elegant scent where smooth suede leather notes highlight those of powdery violets. There is a hint of similarity with the above mentioned TF Ombre Leather, and that’s mostly because of light sweet berry notes.

This is the sweetest leather scent on the list, but very special and beautifully done.
