Graham is not always quite as enthusiastic about the world of watches as Robin, but even he had to admit that, when the invite to join Omega for dinner dropped into his inbox, he was excited, even more so when he read that the location was The Blue Planet, Copenhagen’s spectacular aquarium.
The location was not just an excuse to see some sharks in action; it was a clear link to the watch we were there to learn more about: the Seamaster Planet Ocean, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. A fourth generation of this classic was being introduced, with a new case shape, sharper lines and no helium escape valve: a beautiful watch that nods to the design heritage of the 1950s and 1960s Omega models. It is quite big for us – 42mm case diameter – but when we got the chance to try it on (in the aquarium’s shark tunnel, no less), it felt well-balanced, especially as the new lug design really hugs the wrist.
A select group of forty guests (skewed very markedly towards men, it has to be said) was served top-tier champagne as they examined the inner workings of the new model before sitting down to a wonderful dinner under the towering 8m tall front of the largest tank, with, seemingly, the cast of Finding Nemo watching us eat.
Even Graham was persuaded to change his usual watch for a rather splendid Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M with a champagne dial (sadly just borrowed for the evening) whilst Robin wore the same model with an orange dial instead.
An evening when event and product were in perfect synch, it was most definitely something we will remember for years to come.
